Why Women Struggle To Stay Consistent (And What Your Menstrual Cycle Has To Do With It)

Why can't I stay consistent?
Why do I lose motivation?
Why am I productive one week and exhausted the next?
If you've ever asked yourself these questions, you're definitely not alone.
Do you ever find that phase just after your period when you're full of energy? You're eating well, smashing your workouts, tackling your to-do list and genuinely feel like you can take on the world.
Then suddenly you feel it creeping in.
That drop in energy.
You try to push through for a few days, telling yourself to just be more disciplined, more motivated, more consistent.
Then boom.
Everything feels like too much.
The workouts start getting skipped. The healthy meals go out the window. The to-do list gets longer. You lose your rhythm and start beating yourself up for it.
Lazy.
Useless.
Why can't I just stick to anything?
Trust me, I've been there.
For years, I thought I was the problem.
I'd start a new routine full of enthusiasm and motivation. I'd meal prep, exercise, plan my week and convince myself that this time would be different.
Then a few weeks later I'd be struggling to keep up.
I genuinely thought I lacked discipline.
But what if there was actually a reason behind it?
(Oh please let there be, I hear you say.)
Well, yes. There is.
The thing nobody tells us is that women aren't designed to have the same energy levels every day of the month.
Unlike men, who operate on a roughly 24-hour hormonal cycle, women operate on a monthly hormonal rhythm that changes throughout the menstrual cycle.
That means our energy, focus, motivation, confidence, appetite and even how social we feel can change from week to week.
Just after your period, oestrogen starts rising. Energy increases, motivation returns and life feels easier. This is often when we decide we're going to start a new workout programme, meal plan, business idea or morning routine.
Then a few weeks later, things begin to shift.
Energy starts to dip.
You feel more tired.
You might feel bloated, emotional or less motivated.
Suddenly those workouts that felt easy a few weeks ago feel like climbing a mountain.
And because nobody explained this to us, we assume we're failing.
We quit.
Then we start the cycle all over again.
Discovering cycle syncing completely changed how I viewed myself.
Instead of judging myself for changing throughout the month, I started paying attention.
I tracked my energy levels, my mood, my motivation and my workouts.
And guess what?
There was a pattern.
Every single month.
I realised there was nothing wrong with me.
My body wasn't broken.
It was simply following its natural rhythm.
Now, I know when to push harder and when to pull back.
I know that the few days leading up to my period are usually my lowest-energy days.
So instead of forcing myself through an intense workout and then giving up completely, I adapt.
Some days that looks like strength training.
Other days it looks like stretching on the living room floor doing a few yoga poses, a spinal twist and a happy baby pose.
The difference?
I still showed up.
Maybe not in the same way I did during my high-energy phase, but I showed up.
And that's what consistency really looks like.
Not doing the same thing every day.
Not operating at 100% all month.
But learning how to work with your body instead of constantly fighting against it.
Because consistency isn't about perfection.
It's about continuing, even when your energy changes.
So if you've been calling yourself inconsistent, lazy or unmotivated, I'd like you to remember something:
You're not a machine.
You're not a man operating on a 24-hour hormonal cycle.
You're a woman riding a monthly hormonal rhythm.
And expecting yourself to feel exactly the same every single day was never the goal.
Maybe it's time to stop fighting your rhythm and start working with it instead.
