Why Do I Suddenly Hate Every Outfit I Own?

No, your wardrobe didn’t change overnight.

Yesterday, you wore that outfit and felt great.

You caught your reflection walking past a shop window and thought,

"Actually... I look alright today."

Fast forward twenty-four hours...

You're standing in front of your wardrobe in your underwear.

The bed has disappeared under a mountain of rejected clothes.

You've already changed four times.

You've tried the same pair of jeans on twice, just in case they magically fit differently this time.

Your favourite dress suddenly isn't your favourite anymore.

That top you loved last week?

Absolutely not.

You've reached the point where you're one outfit away from texting,

"I'm so sorry... I'm not feeling great today."

Because let's be honest...

Sometimes it's not that you're ill.

You just can't face getting dressed.

So naturally, you arrive at the only logical conclusion...

Clearly the only sensible solution is an entirely new wardrobe.

Because obviously that's cheaper than admitting you're just having one of those days.

I've lost count of the number of times I've stood in front of the mirror convinced I'd somehow changed overnight.

Not gradually.

Overnight.

Apparently while I was asleep.

It's fascinating how our brains work.

The clothes haven't changed.

The mirror hasn't changed.

The scales probably haven't changed either.

But somehow...

Everything feels different.

You turn sideways.

Pull your top down.

Pull it back up again.

Suck your tummy in.

Let it out.

Stand on tiptoes for absolutely no reason.

Then somehow convince yourself the mirror has become offensive overnight.

You ask the world's most dangerous question...

"Does this make me look...?"

Never finish that sentence.

Nothing good has ever followed it.

And can we just talk about the dramatic outfit changes before leaving the house?

Outfit number one.

"No."

Outfit number two.

"Definitely not."

Outfit number three.

"I look like I'm trying too hard."

Outfit number four.

"I look like I've completely given up."

Outfit number five...

"I'll just melt into black and grey."

Every.

Single.

Time.

Because somehow a grey jumper fixes absolutely everything.

(It doesn't... but I wear it anyway.)

For years I genuinely believed these mornings meant something was wrong with me.

That I'd put on weight overnight.

That I needed to eat better.

Exercise more.

Buy better clothes.

Or somehow become one of those effortlessly stylish women who always look put together, even popping to Tesco.

Spoiler alert...

I'm not her.

The irony is...

If someone else walked through the door wearing exactly the same outfit I'd just rejected, I'd probably think they looked lovely.

Funny how we're always so much kinder to everyone else than we are to ourselves.

Then something clicked.

What if the wardrobe wasn't actually the problem?

Because when I really started paying attention, I noticed something.

There were days when I'd wear exactly the same outfit and feel completely different.

One day I'd walk out the door feeling confident, comfortable and completely myself.

Another day, in exactly the same jeans and grey jumper, I'd spend the entire day tugging at my sleeves, adjusting my top and wondering why I felt so uncomfortable.

Nothing had changed.

Except me.

Or more specifically...

How I felt.

That realisation honestly lifted such a weight off my shoulders.

Because I stopped believing every uncomfortable morning meant I needed to lose weight.

Or buy new clothes.

Or completely reinvent myself.

I realised that as women, we don't wake up feeling exactly the same every single day.

Our confidence changes.

Our energy changes.

Our capacity changes.

Even the way we see ourselves changes.

And that's completely normal.

Understanding that changed everything.

Instead of standing in front of the mirror trying to fix myself...

I started asking a different question.

"How am I actually feeling today?"

Sometimes I'd realise I was exhausted.

Sometimes I'd had a busy week.

Sometimes I'd been looking after everybody else and hadn't stopped for five minutes.

Sometimes my body simply needed a little more kindness than criticism.

That's also when I stopped planning my life around pressure.

I started planning around my energy.

Because the truth is...

On the days when I feel good, I naturally reach for the clothes that make me feel even better.

On the days when I'm not quite feeling myself?

The stretch pants come out.

The oversized grey jumper makes another appearance.

Hair goes in a messy bun.

Trainers.

Minimal make-up.

And somehow I've accidentally dressed exactly the same as I did the last five times this happened.

And do you know what?

That's okay.

I've stopped trying to force "confident outfit energy" on days when my body is asking for something softer.

Because confidence isn't something you wear.

It's something you feel.

And feelings aren't permanent.

They come and go.

Just like energy.

Now, when I have one of those mornings where I hate everything I own, I don't immediately assume my wardrobe is broken.

Or that I am.

I remind myself that tomorrow might feel completely different.

Because it usually does.

The funny thing is...

Nine times out of ten, the outfit I rejected today somehow becomes my favourite again next week.

Funny that.

So if you've ever stood surrounded by a mountain of clothes wondering what happened...

You're not broken.

You're not vain.

And you're definitely not the only woman who's nearly cancelled plans because every outfit suddenly looked wrong.

You're just having one of those days.

And those days don't last forever.
