What Is Cycle Syncing? A Beginner's Guide

If you've recently stumbled across the term cycle syncing and found yourself wondering what everyone is banging on about, don't worry—you're not alone.

A few years ago, I was exactly the same.

I'd heard women talking about planning their work around their cycle, eating different foods during different phases and adjusting their workouts depending on where they were in the month.

Honestly?

I thought it all sounded a bit "woo woo".

Then I read Do Less by Kate Northrup.

The book focused mainly on work and productivity, but it introduced me to the idea that women aren't designed to operate like men.

That was the moment the penny dropped.

I'd spent years trying to be the same person every day.

The same energy.

The same motivation.

The same productivity.

The same enthusiasm for life.

And funnily enough, it wasn't working.

Some weeks I'd feel unstoppable. I'd be meal prepping, working out, planning content, cleaning the house and deciding I was finally becoming one of those women who had her life together.

Three weeks later?

I'd be eating cheese standing in front of the fridge, wondering why I'd agreed to absolutely everything in my diary.

Sound familiar?

That's when I started looking deeper and discovered that pretty much everything was connected to my cycle.

My energy.

My motivation.

My workouts.

My appetite.

My mood.

Even my ability to tolerate other humans.

And suddenly everything made sense.

So What Is Cycle Syncing?

Cycle syncing is simply the practice of adjusting your lifestyle to support the different phases of your menstrual cycle.

That includes things like:

  • Exercise

  • Nutrition

  • Work

  • Planning

  • Self-care

  • Social activities

  • Rest and recovery

Instead of expecting yourself to feel exactly the same every day, cycle syncing recognises that your hormones naturally change throughout the month.

And when your hormones change, your energy often changes too.

The goal isn't to control your cycle.

The goal is to understand it.

Why Does It Matter?

Because most women spend years believing they're inconsistent.

I know I did.

I'd start a new workout plan in my follicular phase when I felt amazing.

I'd sign up for things.

Set goals.

Create colour-coded spreadsheets.

Buy a new notebook.

Basically become the CEO of my own life for about ten days.

Then luteal phase would arrive and suddenly even answering a text message felt like a full-time job.

I thought I lacked discipline.

I thought I needed more motivation.

What I actually needed was a better understanding of how my body worked.

Once I stopped expecting myself to operate at 100% every single day, I became far more consistent.

Not because I was doing more.

Because I stopped quitting.

That's the difference.

The Four Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle

Menstrual Phase

(Rest • Reflect • Reset)

This is when your period arrives.

Think cosy socks, early nights and giving yourself permission to slow down without feeling guilty about it.

Your body is already doing a lot of work behind the scenes.

You don't need to win Employee of the Month this week too.

Great time for:

✔ Rest

✔ Reflection

✔ Gentle movement

✔ Planning ahead

Follicular Phase

(Plan • Begin • Explore)

This is my "I've got a new personality and she's thriving" phase.

Energy rises.

Motivation returns.

You suddenly want to organise cupboards, start new projects and become the healthiest version of yourself.

Use it.

This is a brilliant time for:

✔ Goal setting

✔ Strength training

✔ Learning new things

✔ Trying something different

Ovulatory Phase

(Do • Share • Connect)

Hello confidence.

This is usually the phase where many women feel most social, energetic and outgoing.

You know those days when talking to people feels easy?

This is often why.

Perfect for:

✔ Meetings

✔ Networking

✔ Presentations

✔ Content creation

✔ Social plans

Luteal Phase

(Refine • Complete • Protect)

Ah yes.

My old friend.

The phase where Follicular Me writes a to-do list and Luteal Me wonders if she's ever met this woman before.

Energy gradually decreases.

You may feel more sensitive, more hungry and less interested in socialising.

And that's okay.

This isn't the phase for starting ten new projects.

It's the phase for finishing things, tying up loose ends and protecting your energy.

Think:

✔ Walking

✔ Pilates

✔ Meal prep

✔ Organisation

✔ Saying no without writing a five-page apology

Do You Need To Do Everything Perfectly?

Absolutely not.

In fact, that's probably the biggest lesson cycle syncing has taught me.

This isn't about changing your entire life every week.

It's about understanding yourself better.

Some months you'll feel completely in sync.

Other months you'll eat biscuits in bed and wonder why everyone is breathing so loudly.

Both are normal.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is awareness.

Because once you understand your rhythm, you can stop fighting it.

And trust me, life becomes a whole lot easier when you do.
