The 4 Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle Explained

Ever looked at something you enthusiastically agreed to three weeks ago and thought:

"Who on earth signed me up for this?"

Just me?

You know the feeling.

One week you're booking social events, planning a new fitness routine, deciding to redecorate the spare room and meal prep for the entire month.

The next week you're hiding from your phone, eating snacks over the kitchen sink and wondering if everyone could just leave you alone for five minutes.

For years I genuinely thought I was inconsistent.

It turns out I was simply experiencing different phases of my cycle.

One of the biggest things cycle syncing taught me is that we're not supposed to feel the same every day.

We're not robots.

We're certainly not men operating on a 24-hour hormonal cycle.

We're women, and our hormones shift throughout the month.

The more I learned about the four phases of the menstrual cycle, the more I realised each phase comes with its own strengths, challenges and superpowers.

So let's meet the four versions of you.

Phase 1: Menstrual You

(Rest • Reflect • Reset)

This is the version of you that just wants everyone to stop asking questions.

Your period arrives.

Energy is often lower.

Your body is busy doing important work.

And if you're anything like me, your desire to wear stretchy waistbands suddenly increases dramatically.

This phase gets a bad reputation because we've been taught that slowing down is a weakness.

It's not.

This is your body's reset week.

It's the perfect time to:

✔ Rest without guilt

✔ Reflect on the previous month

✔ Journal

✔ Read

✔ Go for gentle walks

✔ Watch Netflix wrapped in a blanket

Think of this phase as winter.

Nothing is growing right now.

The magic is happening underground.

Phase 2: Follicular You

(Plan • Begin • Explore)

Ah, here she is.

The woman who suddenly believes she can achieve absolutely anything.

Energy starts climbing.

Motivation returns.

Ideas start flowing.

This is usually the phase where I convince myself I can launch three new projects, renovate the garden and become a morning person all at the same time.

Follicular phase is your spring.

Everything feels fresh.

This is a brilliant time for:

✔ Planning

✔ Learning

✔ Starting new habits

✔ Trying new workouts

✔ Creating content

✔ Saying yes to opportunities

Your confidence is growing and your energy is following right behind it.

Use it.

Phase 3: Ovulatory You

(Do • Share • Connect)

If Follicular You makes the plans, Ovulatory You wants to show them off.

This is often when many women feel their most confident, outgoing and social.

You're more likely to:

✔ Speak up

✔ Socialise

✔ Feel attractive

✔ Take centre stage

✔ Enjoy being around people

This is your summer.

Everything is in full bloom.

Need to record a video?

Host a workshop?

Pitch an idea?

Go on a first date?

This is often the phase where it feels easiest.

It's also the phase where I suddenly think talking to strangers is a perfectly acceptable hobby.

Phase 4: Luteal You

(Refine • Complete • Protect)

Now before you start blaming everything on your luteal phase, let's give her some credit.

Because she's actually the reason so much gets finished.

While Follicular You is busy collecting ideas, Luteal You is excellent at spotting what needs improving.

This is your editing phase.

Your refining phase.

Your "let's sort this mess out" phase.

As energy gradually declines, you may notice:

✔ More sensitivity

✔ Less patience

✔ Bigger appetite

✔ A stronger need for downtime

✔ Less tolerance for nonsense

And honestly?

Sometimes that's exactly what we need.

Luteal You isn't broken.

She's protective.

She's helping you decide what deserves your energy and what doesn't.

Think autumn.

The season of clearing out, tidying up and preparing for what's next.

The Secret Nobody Talks About

The goal isn't to become a different person every week.

The goal is to understand why different versions of you show up throughout the month.

Because once you understand that:

  • Menstrual You needs rest.

  • Follicular You loves possibility.

  • Ovulatory You loves connection.

  • Luteal You loves completion.

...everything starts making a lot more sense.

You stop fighting yourself.

You stop expecting the same energy every day.

And most importantly, you stop believing you're failing whenever your needs change.

You're not inconsistent.

You're cyclical.

And that's exactly how you're supposed to be.
